About the Symposium

The symposium will include these subject areas: pedagogy, literature, philosophy, psychology, preparation, score study, gesture, marching band topics, specific instrument pedagogy (from the podium) and rehearsal techniques, each of which will be presented by leaders in the field. The symposium is for both middle and high school music educators and college or university faculty. If you are at least a junior music education major or a graduate student at another university, you are welcome and encouraged to attend as well.

The week will include a large amount of "open dialogue" with clinicians and each other, both on campus and in the evening at local establishments in Kansas City - a wonderful town of more than two million residents. There will be a symposium wind band that will serve as an ensemble that will enable the first 25 registrants to actually conduct the ensemble while receiving feedback from many of our guests. We are also fortunate to have Craig Kirchhoff, a name I hope each of us knows, as a guest. There are many other experts in our field who will also be joining us. Several of my UMKC colleagues will be presenting clinics during the week, and we are fortunate to have a resource section (CDs, books scored, DVDs, etc.) supplied by various music companies during the week.
