Wind Band Teaching Symposium Participant: (Tentative schedule information enclosed)

We are looking forward to your participation in the 2009 Wind Band Teaching Symposium (WBTS) at the University of Missouri, Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance on July 12th ? 17th. Enclosed in this letter is a plethora of information that applies to the weeklong event.  It is important that you read all instructions carefully to ensure that your participation in the symposium is both educational and enjoyable.

Those conducting will do so twice during the WBTS.  This will either be done once each on Monday and Wednesday or once each on Tuesday and Thursday.  If you have forgotten your piece requests or have questions, please contact Dana Buchanan at 816-235-2913 or via email at buchananda@umkc.edu.

Registration and Opening Session - Sunday July 12th

WBTS registration will be held from 4:00 ? 6:30 p.m. in the James C. Olson Performing Arts Center (PAC) lobby at 4949 Cherry Street, KC, MO 64110.  Campus housing check in 4:00 ? 6:00 p.m. The group opening session will be held in White Recital Hall in the PAC at 7:00 p.m. Sunday evening.  If you need to arrive later due to schedule conflicts please contact Dana.

Schedule

The schedule located on the band?s website is a tentative listing of WBTS events.  You will receive a final schedule at registration.  Daily sessions include a conducting component and an opportunity to experience music-making as a large ensemble. It is expected that everyone will participate in the Wind Band.  DON?T FORGET YOUR INSTRUMENT!  The updated schedule and additional information can be found at the Conservatory?s Bands website located at http://conservatory.umkc.edu/bands/symposium.asp and will be updated regularly.  The WBTS will end around noon Friday; all flights should be scheduled after 2:30 p.m.

WBTS Conducting Component

It is important to note that the greatest learning occurs from watching others and assimilating ideas that are illuminated through this process.  The conducting sessions will be designed to highlight and demonstrate conducting techniques and strategies that each of us can utilize in our rehearsals on a daily basis.  We will provide a DVD to all conductors.  Even if you are not a participating conductor, please bring a baton and your instrument with you to the symposium! Additional conducting may will be added.  Conductors will be chosen in the order that the forms are received (a final conducting schedule will be sent in June ? all schedules are subject to change; final schedules will be available during registration).

Airport Transportation

Participants arriving at Kansas City International Airport can take the SuperShuttle.
