UMKC Opera presents: Cendrillon by Jules Massenet
November 14, 15, 16 at 7:30
November 17 at 2:30
The Conservatory presents its fall opera, Jules Massenet's Cendrillon, a "fairy tale" opera in four acts with French libretto by Henri Cain. The fall opera is one of the Conservatory’s many lush productions. Jules Massenet’s Cendrillon features, of course Cinderella, Prince Charming, the fairy godmother, and an exciting cast of characters.
Fenlon Lamb, the opera’s director notes, “Originally, I was going to set the opera in the late Baroque. As I worked through many of the elements with the design team, I realized we had a great opportunity to update it to the 1920s. The Art Deco style is hard-edged and yet truly opulent and works well as the backdrop for the haughty, stuck-up stepmother and sisters as well as the decadent world of the handsome Prince Charming.
There are a few noticeable differences from the familiar Disney Cinderella or Rossini's opera La Cenerentola. Cendrillon has a father! And a very sympathetic one at that. There are no little mice and farm animals to help her get ready for the ball...that's all taken care of by the fairies, both singers and dancers in this production.
The opera is performed in French with English supertitles.
