About the Festival
The George Salisbury Jazz Festival provides an extraordinary weekend for jazz musicians and educators. Instrumental school jazz ensembles of all levels – middle school through college/university - are invited to perform in Pierson Auditorium at the UMKC University Center on Friday and Saturday, February 5th and 6th. In addition to the performance, each group receives feedback from festival clinicians on stage (30 minutes total time on/off). Instrument-specific clinic sessions provide musicians a chance to ask questions and gain information from recognized experts in jazz performance and education.
The Festival also includes two public concerts:
- Friday afternoon, 12:30 p.m., UMKC 11 O'Clock Jazz Band
- Saturday evening, 7:30 p.m., George Salisbury Memorial Scholarship Concert: Conservatory Concert Jazz Band with featured guest artist
Although the Festival is non-competitive, outstanding festival musicians and soloists will be announced at the opening of the Saturday evening concert and will be awarded certificates of achievement.
Friday’s concert will take place at 12:30 pm in Pierson Auditorium and feature the 11 O’clock Jazz Band under the direction of Michael Pagán. The Saturday concert will feature the Conservatory Concert Jazz Band led by Bobby Watson with our special guest artist. Proceeds from this concert will benefit the George Salisbury Memorial Scholarship fund.
Past festival guest artists have included Jaleel Shaw, Jon Faddis, Slide Hampton, Paquito D'Rivera, Ray Mantilla, Curtis Lundy, Tim Hagens, Bob Brookmeyer, Gary Foster, Bryan Lynch, Conrad Herwig, Howard Johnson, Robin Eubanks, and Randy Brecker.

About George Salisbury
George Salisbury (1918 – 1986) moved to Kansas City, Missouri from his hometown of Lawrence, Kansas in 1936 and worked at the Avalon Dance hall as a member of the Tommy Douglas orchestra. He then studied piano with the great Mary Lou Williams. After serving in the U.S. Army Band during World War II, he became the house pianist for Kansas City’s Boulevard Room, backing such luminaries as Billie Holiday, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Dinah Washington, and many more. In the early 1950s he studied music at the Kansas City Conservatory (later to become part of UMKC) and joined its faculty in 1957. Earning a legendary reputation as a jazz artist and educator, he taught at the Conservatory until his death in 1986. In 2005 the George Salisbury Scholarship fund became endowed, ensuring that jazz students will continue to have the opportunity to benefit from this resource to further their jazz education.

A saxophonist, composer, producer and educator, Bobby Watson trained formally at the University of Miami and earned even greater credibility and experience as musical director of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, the ultimate “postgraduate school” for ambitious young players. Along the way, he worked with such notable jazz artists as Max Roach, Louis Hayes, George Coleman, Sam Rivers and Wynton and Branford Marsalis, as well as vocalists Joe Williams, Dianne Reeves, Lou Rawls, Betty Carter and Carmen Lundy. Later, in association with bassist Curtis Lundy and drummer Victor Lewis, Watson launched the first edition of Horizon, his acoustic quintet. Watson also wrote original music for the sound track of Robert Deniro¹s directorial debut “A Bronx Tale”. Bobby has recorded 26 records as a leader and appears on more than 80 recordings to date and over 100 compositions. In 2000, Bobby serves as the director of jazz studies at the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance.Bobby will be on leave for the spring of 2008.
Faculty Host: Michael Pagán
Michael Pagán joined the Conservatory faculty as Assistant Director of Jazz Studies in the Fall of 2005. His teaching duties include jazz improvisation, jazz styles and analysis, jazz piano, and the 11 O’clock jazz band. Prior to his UMKC appointment, Mike was on the jazz faculty at the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he served as Interim Director of Jazz Studies. He has also served as Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Minnesota, Duluth. Pagán received his Doctor of Music degree from Northwestern University and his Master of Arts degree from Kent State University, both in composition. His Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education is also from Kent State University. Dr. Pagán has received numerous awards and commissions for his compositions and arrangements, including First Prize, New Music for Young Ensembles composers competition, which included a Carnegie Hall premiere; commissions from Michigan Music Teachers Association, the Lake Superior Chamber Orchestra, WLS-TV Channel 7, Chicago, and high schools and colleges throughout the country. Mike is much in demand as a jazz pianist, having performed professionally for nearly thirty years with many jazz greats including Gary Burton, Slide Hampton, Robin Eubanks, Wallace Roney, Lew Soloff, Marvin Stamm, Lennie Niehaus, Frank Tiberi, Billy Hart, Milt Hinton, and John Clayton, among many others. He has most recently performed with Kenny Wheeler, Ralph Peterson, Jiggs Whigham, and Greg Abate, with whom he recorded. Downbeat Magazine has called him "a versatile keyboard improviser" and his debut CD “Is Waiting For You” (Cadence Jazz Records) met with much critical acclaim; Andrew Bartlett for Arts Midwest said "this is one of the finest bop-oriented dates I've listened in on lately." His solo piano release entitled Nobody Else But Me (Capri Jazz Records) received similar accolades; Scott Yanow’s review of it described Pagán as “a superior jazz pianist” and Brad Weismann of The Colorado Daily said "If Bach had played jazz, it might have sounded like this." In 2004 Dr. Pagán traveled to The Netherlands, appearing as solo jazz pianist at "Grand Café Meneer Frits" in Eindhoven and in concert with the Pagán/Walter Duo (Doug Walter, vibraphone) in Thorn. Other recent appearances include a performance at the World Saxophone Congress in Minneapolis; a residency at Rhode Island College, and premieres of commissioned works for the jazz ensembles of Long Beach (CA) Polytechnic and New Trier (IL ) High Schools.
