Conservatory in the Schools

The groundbreaking Conservatory in the Schools programs provide high-quality performing arts instruction encompassing three distinct in-school programs and targets young musicians from underrepresented populations in the Kansas City metro area.  Students who are involved with the Conservatory in the Schools programs work with distinguished guest artists, such as arts education leader and founder of the Sphinx Organization Aaron Dworkin, innovative composer, performer, violinist and bandleader Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR), and musician and educator Stanford Thompson. Other guest artists have included Sphinx Chamber Orchestra, Imani Winds, Martin BresnickMichael Daugherty, Madeleine Shapiro, cellist, and Rolf Schulte, violinist.

Ensembles in the Schools provides high-quality band, orchestra, and general music instruction in area elementary and middle schools. Since its 1998 inception, Ensembles in the Schools has reached hundreds of students learning to sing or play orchestra and band instruments. The program prepares younger students for the intensive instructional environment of Musical Bridges and Composers in the Schools.

Musical Bridges provides exeptional young musicians with the intensive, one-on-one instruction and performance experience necesary to prepare for auditions into selective university programs such as the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance.
