Partnerships and Community Concerts
For 10 years, ArtSounds, a collaboration between the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance and the Kansas City Art Institute has thrived. Initiated by faculty from the UMKC Conservatory and the Kansas City Art Institute, ArtSounds explored cross-media expression through creative concert-making. Co-directors Mara Gibson and Paul Rudy set the stage for concert events outside the box and inside the mind's eye and the eye's ear. Faculty partners from each institution produced provocative events that explored media and music.
In ArtSounds performances, vision informs hearing and hearing guides sight in this essential dialogue at the messy intersections of human experience. ArtSounds performances are free and open to the public.
Now, coming into its 11th year, the Conservatory is excited to announce to new community based partners: the Charlotte Street Foundation and Art in the Loop. We want to thank KCAI for their support for our first 10 years, but in looking forward, hope to cross pollinate audiences from both academic and community based organizations.

Mnemosyne Quartet and Eric Souther will present Fragmented Realities, an immersive performance installation that utilizes eight-channel surround sound and panoramic video featuring footage from Kansas City's Union Station, Zoo and Motor Speedway. Video will be fed into custom software using lumakeying and pixel sorting paired with difital feedback that will creat repetitions into infinity. Mnemosyne will transport the sonic environments through live manipulation of source recording and guided improvisation.
Kansas City Calling
May 4, 2017 at Prairie Logic
Kansas City Calling will connect audiences at Prairie Logic with a reverberant soundscape in the canyon of nearby skyscrapers while recalling the city's past using descriptive texts. Short segments of original and borrowed music interwoven with the descriptive readings will be set around the performance space and will draw audience members in to a final concert featuring the Jibirish Horn Quartet and members of the UMKC Conservatory's Horn Studio. Collaborators include: Steve Landis, Daniel Morel and Maddy Tarantelli.
