Festivals and Summer Programs

The Academy's festivals and summer programs provide enrichment experiences and in-depth training for middle and high school students, aspiring professionals, and established career performing artists.

Advanced Choral Conducting Workshop (June 1–3, 2017) focuses on conducting technique for the choral conductor.  Directed by Dr. Robert Bode.

Kansas City Saxophone Workshop (June 11–15, 2017) gives high school students (Grades 9-12) the opportunity to study with renowned saxophone performers and instructors.  Directed by Zach Shemon.

Composition Workshop (June 18–23, 2017) for ages 14 and up is an intensive weeklong musical experience that helps young composers hone their craft and find their creative voices.  Directed by Dr. Mara Gibson.

Kansas City Conducting Symposium at UMKC (June 18–23, 2017) is an intensive professional development workshop with UMKC Conservatory Director of Bands Steven Davis and distinguished guest clinicians.

UMKC Jazz Camp (June 25–29, 2017) is for aspiring jazz instrumentalists ages 12 and up. Participants work with Jazz Camp co-directors Bobby Watson and Dan Thomas, along with UMKC Conservatory's top-notch jazz faculty and with well-known guest artists.

Glenda Brown Choreography Project (July 16-28, 2017) offers choreographers and dancers a phenomenal opportunity to explore and develop both technique and artistry.


Professional Development Workshops for UMKC credit include reading sessions offered by J.W. Pepper, classes, and unique performing arts experiences.


Midwest Honor Band and Orchestra Festival (February 10–12, 2017) The annual Midwest Honor Band and Orchestra Festival provides rewarding music experiences for middle and high school band students and band directors.  Nationally recognized guest conductors and UMKC faculty host a full schedule of concerts, master classes, and professional clinics, offering in-service time and personal growth.  The festival is hosted by UMKC Conservatory faculty members Steven D. Davis and Joseph Parisi.
