How to Apply

New!  Applying to the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance now requires just one application: UMKC Application

Please note: As of November 2017, we will no longer be using Decision Desk to complete our Conservatory Supplemental Application.  All application materials can be submitted through the UMKC General Application, and no supplemental application is required.  For questions about our application process, please read below or contact us at cadmissions@umkc.edu or 816-235-2900

The Conservatory does not accept paper applications; you must apply online.

 


Deadlines

Applying for Fall 2018 and Summer 2018:

  • For the following programs, deadline for completion and submission of all application materials is December 1, 2017:
    • Graduate Voice Performance (MM, DMA, Performer's Certificate, Artist Certificate)
    • Lyric Opera of Kansas City/UMKC Young Artist Program
    • Graduate Saxophone (MM, DMA, Performer’s Certificate, Artist Certificate)
    • Graduate Trumpet (MM, DMA, Performer’s Certificate, Artist Certificate)
    • DMA or Artist Certificate in Piano Performance
    • Music Composition (BM, MM, DMA)
  • For all other programs: Deadline for completion and submission of all application materials is December 15, 2017 (11:59pm CST). 

 

Graduate VOICE, Doctoral Level PIANO, Graduate TRUMPET, and Graduate SAXOPHONE applicants: this is a pre screening process. Successfully screened applicants will be invited to UMKC for a live audition on the requested audition date.  More information about pre-screenings is available on our Audition/Interview Dates, Procedures page
COMPOSITION applicants: the application process will require the uploading of musical scores and accompanying sound files.  Undergraduate composition applicants who pass the composition evaluation will be required to perform an applied audition on one of the Conservatory's scheduled audition dates.  Graduate composition applicants are exempt from performing an audition.

Application Details

The UMKC application will require a few extra items that also need to be submitted. Please check the categories below to see which one applies to your application process. Send these materials to the address listed on the UMKC application form.

Freshman Domestic Applicants 

  • UMKC online general application.  As part of the application, you will need to submit:
    • Musical resume or CV (please list all relevant music or dance experience)
    • Three references are required.  The application will ask you to list the names and contact information of your references, and the application system will send an email to each reference requesting that they submit a letter on your behalf.
    • Other materials as they apply to your desired program.   If your program requires a special submission (eg. Composition portfolio, dance photo, etc, you will upload this directly to the application.
    • You will also choose an audition date on this application.  You can find more information about auditions here: Audition / Interview Dates, Procedures
  • Other items will need to be sent directly to the UMKC Admissions Office:
    • Official transcripts of all high school work, and dual enrollment transcripts (if applicable)
    • ACT or SAT scores
    • University application fee
    • Any other documents requested by the University Admissions office

Transfer applicants

  • UMKC online general application.  As part of the application, you will need to submit:
    • Musical resume or CV (please list all relevant music or dance experience)
    • Three references are required.  The application will ask you to list the names and contact information of your references, and the application system will send an email to each reference requesting that they submit a letter on your behalf.
    • Other materials as they apply to your desired program.   If your program requires a special submission (eg. Composition portfolio, dance photo, etc, you will upload this directly to the application.
    • You will also choose an audition date on this application.  You can find more information about auditions here: Audition / Interview Dates, Procedures
  • Other items will need to be sent directly to the UMKC Admissions Office:
    • Official transcripts of all college coursework. Transfer applicants with less than 24 credit hours must also submit transcripts of all high school work and ACT/SAT scores.
    • University application fee
    • Any other documents requested by the University Admissions office

Graduate Applicants

  • UMKC online general application.  As part of the application, you will need to submit:
    • Musical resume or CV (please list all relevant musical or academic experience)
    • Three references are required.  The application will ask you to list the names and contact information of your references, and the application system will send an email to each reference requesting that they submit a letter on your behalf.
    • Other materials as they apply to your desired program.   If your program requires a special submission (eg. Composition portfolio, dance photo, writing sample, etc, you will upload this directly to the application.
    • You will also choose an audition date on this application if one is required by your program.  You can find more information about auditions here: Audition / Interview Dates, Procedures
  • Other items will need to be sent directly to the UMKC Admissions Office:
    • Official transcripts of all previous college level work
    • University application fee
    • Any other documents requested by the University Admissions office
  • The Conservatory does NOT require a GRE or GMAT

International Applicants

  • UMKC online general application.  As part of the application, you will need to submit:
    • Musical resume or CV (please list all relevant music or dance experience)
    • Three references are required.  The application will ask you to list the names and contact information of your references, and the application system will send an email to each reference requesting that they submit a letter on your behalf.
    • Other materials as they apply to your desired program.   If your program requires a special submission (eg. Composition portfolio, dance photo, etc, you will upload this directly to the application.
    • You will also choose an audition date on this application.  You can find more information about auditions here: Audition / Interview Dates, Procedures
  • Other items will need to be sent directly to the UMKC International Student Affairs Office, including:
    • Official transcripts and translations of all pertinent school course work
    • University international application fee
    • TOEFL test score (this requirement is waived for applicants who will have a degree from an English-speaking institution)
    • Certified Statement of Financial Responsibility (see international application for complete details)
    • Personal Statement
    • Any other documents requested by the International Student Affairs Office
