How to Apply

Applying to the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance requires just one application.  UMKC Online Application

We recommend that Conservatory applicants apply through UMKC Application and NOT through the Common App.  If you applied through Common App, you will have additional requirements to complete through UMKC application portal.  Please contact us with questions: 816-235-2900.

The Conservatory does not accept paper applications; you must apply online.

 


Deadlines

Applying for Fall 2019 and Summer 2019:

  • For the following programs, deadline for completion and submission of all application materials is December 1, 2018:
    • Graduate Voice Performance (MM, DMA, Performer's Certificate, Artist Certificate)
    • Lyric Opera of Kansas City/UMKC Young Artist Program
    • Graduate Saxophone (MM, DMA, Performer’s Certificate, Artist Certificate)
    • Graduate Trumpet (MM, DMA, Performer’s Certificate, Artist Certificate) (the deadline for graduate trumpet has been extended to December 15, 2018)
    • DMA or Artist Certificate in Piano Performance
    • Music Composition (BM, MM, DMA)
  • For all other programs: Deadline for completion and submission of all application materials is December 15, 2018 (11:59pm CST). 

 

Graduate VOICE, Doctoral Level PIANO, Graduate TRUMPET, and Graduate SAXOPHONE applicants: this is a pre screening process. Successfully screened applicants will be invited to UMKC for a live audition on the requested audition date.  More information about pre-screenings is available on our Audition/Interview Dates, Procedures page
COMPOSITION applicants: the application process will require the uploading of musical scores and accompanying sound files.  Undergraduate composition applicants who pass the composition evaluation will be required to perform an applied audition on one of the Conservatory's scheduled audition dates.  Graduate composition applicants are exempt from performing an audition.

Application Details

The UMKC application will require a few extra items that also need to be submitted. Please check the categories below to see which one applies to your application process. Send these materials to the address listed on the UMKC application form.

Freshman Domestic Applicants 

Online Application:  As part of the application, you will need to submit:

  • Musical resume or CV: no specific format required; please list all relevant music or dance experience such as ensembles, schools, teachers, performances, awards, or any other information you feel is relevant.
  • Three references who can write you a letter of recommendation.  The application will ask you to list the names and contact information of your references, and the application system will send an email to each reference requesting that they submit a letter on your behalf.
  • Other materials as they apply to your desired program
    • BM Composition applicants will need to submit a Composition portfolio.  Both scores and videos can be uploaded directly to the application.
    • BFA Dance applicants will need to submit a dance photo by uploading it to the application.
    • Piano Performance applicants will need to submit a list of repertoire previously studied
    • A space to upload videos is available to all applicants, but this section is not required unless otherwise specified.
  • You will also choose an audition date on this application.  You can find more information about auditions here: Audition / Interview Dates, Procedures

Other items will need to be sent directly to the UMKC Admissions Office (please do not send these to the Conservatory):

Transfer Domestic applicants

  • Official transcripts of all college coursework.  Transcripts can be sent by mail or secured email (addresses available in the link below).
  • Transfer applicants with fewer than 24 credit hours must also submit transcripts of all high school work and ACT/SAT scores.
  • University application fee
  • Any other documents requested by the University Admissions office

Graduate Domestic Applicants

Additional materials will need to be sent directly to the UMKC Admissions Office:

  • Official transcripts of all previous college level work
    • Transcripts are considered official if they are received in a sealed envelope or sent electronically to the Office of Admissions through either Parchment, National Student Clearing House, or eScrip-Safe.

International Applicants

Additional materials will need to be sent directly to the UMKC International Student Affairs Office, including:

  • Official transcripts and translations of all pertinent school course work.
  • University international application fee
  • TOEFL test score (this requirement is waived for applicants who will have a degree from an English-speaking institution)
  • Certified Statement of Financial Responsibility
  • Any other documents requested by the International Student Affairs Office
