Instructor of Music Theory
Laura New joined the Conservatory of Music and Dance in 2004 as an adjunct instructor in music theory and aural skills. She holds a Master of Music in Horn Performance from New Mexico State University and a Bachelor of Arts from Delta State University. She has also completed the course work toward a DMA in Horn Performance at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Prior to joining the Conservatory, Ms. New taught courses in music theory, ear training, music fundamentals, music appreciation and humanities at Johnson County Community College. She also taught music theory, ear training and horn at New Mexico State University. Laura New remains active as a performer, presenting solo recitals and playing with chamber ensembles in the Kansas City area. Orchestras with which she has performed include the Kansas City Camerata, the Kansas City Civic Orchestra, the El Paso Symphony and the Las Cruces Symphony. She has also been a member of the El Paso Brass Quintet and the New Mexico State University Faculty Brass Quintet. Ms. New was a 1990 recipient of the Outstanding Teaching Award at UMKC and a 1989 recipient of a Kemper Doctoral Fellowship.
