Associate Professor of Flute

MARY POSSES, a three-time recipient of the UMKC Conservatory’s Excellence-in-Teaching Award, has developed a studio noted for excellence and high achievement. Her students are frequent winners and finalists in major local, regional, national, and international competitions (Artists International, MTNA Young Artist, MTNA Chamber Music, NFA Young Artist, NFA Professional Performers, NFA Master Class, Naftzger, St. Louis Artist Presentation Society, Concorso Internazionale di Musica da Camera Gaetano Zinetti, Sigma Alpha Iota, Mu Phi Epsilon International Competition, Kansas City Musical Club, Myrna Brown, William Garrison International Collaborative Artist, UMKC Conservatory Concerto/Aria Competition, etc.); have been awarded numerous prestigious grants (Fulbright, Rotary, UMKC Women’s Council Graduate Assistant Fund Fellowship, etc.); win places in top summer music festivals (Tanglewood, Sarasota, Atlantic, Piccolo Spoleto, Grand Teton, Symphony Orchestra Academy of the Pacific, Eastern Music Festival, Bowdoin, PRISMA, Miami Summer Music Festival, Pierre Monteux School for Conductors and Orchestral Musicians, etc.) and master classes; gain admission to other leading music schools for further study; and establish successful careers in performance, teaching, conducting, arts administration, and other music-related fields.

Dr. Posses has appeared in solo, orchestral, and chamber concerts throughout the United States, including performances in New York’s Tully Hall, Carnegie Recital Hall, CAMI Hall, and the Metropolitan Museum, and has been an invited performer and speaker at numerous National Flute Association Conventions. She has been a member of the Kansas City Wind Quintet, The Baroque Ensemble of Kansas City, the UMKC Contemporary Chamber Players, The Aurora Trio, and a duo with guitarist Douglas Niedt. Orchestral experience includes Principal Flute positions with the Stamford (CT) Symphony, the Orchestra of Santa Fe, and the New Haven Opera Theatre, as well as numerous performances in the Kansas City Philharmonic. Actively involved in contemporary music, she has premiered works for flute by such leading composers as James Mobberley, Harvey Sollberger, and Yehudi Wyner. She appears on a CD of the music of Jehan Alain with organist James Higdon and on a CRI recording of works by Yehudi Wyner. From 2003 to 2012, she was Woodwind Coordinator for the Heartland Summer Chamber Music Festival. In 2007, she spent two weeks in China as a guest artist/professor at Beijing’s Central Conservatory of Music, where she performed, gave flute master classes, and coached chamber music. In 2011, she was invited to Australia to serve on as an external examiner in the PhD program in Flute Performance at the Conservatorium of Music of the University of Tasmania.

A coordinator of UMKC’s Student Chamber Music Program, Dr. Posses is also faculty coach of the UMKC Conservatory Graduate Fellowship Woodwind Quintet. She has served as chair of the Conservatory’s largest division, Instrumental Studies, and is currently Woodwind Area Coordinator.

Dr. Posses has been an adjudicator for the National Flute Association’s Young Artist, Master Class, and Chamber Music Competitions; Seattle Young Artist Festival and Competition; GM/Seventeen Magazine Competition; Alpha Delta Kappa International Competition; Des Moines Symphony Competition; Kansas City Flute Association Rising Stars Competition; the Shooting Stars Competition of the Arts Council of Johnson County; and numerous MTNA Competitions. Co-founder, former President, and former newsletter editor of the Kansas City Flute Association, she was that organization’s Guest-Artist Events Coordinator for 26 years, establishing one of the country’s most impressive series of master classes and recitals by many of the world’s leading flutists. She was elected to the National Flute Association’s Board of Directors, was appointed to two terms on the College Music Society’s Performance Advisory Panel, and served for six years on the Board of the Chamber Music Society of Kansas City.

Dr. Posses is a graduate of Yale (BA magna cum laude, MM, MMA, DMA), where her teacher was Thomas Nyfenger; she also studied with Julius Baker, Samuel Baron, Frank Bowen, Erich Graf, Karl Kraber, and Marcel Moyse.
