Head of UMKC Music/Media Library, Adjunct Associate Professor
Nara Newcomer is Head of UMKC’s Music/Media Library and Adjunct Associate Professor at the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance, teaching Introduction to Music Research and Bibliography. Newcomer holds degrees from the State University of New York at Buffalo (M.A., Music History, M.L.S., Library Science) and Bethany College, Lindsborg, KS (B.A., Music Performance/Piano, Minor, Sacred Music/Organ).
Newcomer’s research interests span music and librarianship. The challenges she observed people encounter while finding music materials in library catalogs led to her work with music discovery systems, including leading the creation of the 2012 Music Discovery Requirements. Her passion for sacred music and hymnody resulted in an in-depth analysis of a manuscript hymnal attributed to the pen of John Wesley, published in Common-Place: The Journal of Early American Life. Newcomer has also published in Music Reference Services Quarterly, Notes: The Journal of the Music Library Association, Forum Musikbibliothek, and Collection Building and presented at numerous professional conferences. She is an active member of the Music Library Association and Music OCLC Users’ Group and a Colleague of the American Guild of Organists.
