Debra K. Raffety
Adjunct Instructor of Music Education
Debra Raffety received her Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Kansas, Lawrence. She received her Master of Arts in School Leadership from Baker University, Baldwin, Kansas. Since 1999, she has taught K–6 general music in the Shawnee Mission School District, first at Overland Park Elementary School and currently at Rosehill Elementary School. She began her work as an adjunct professor at UMKC in fall 2004.
Raffety is committed to giving elementary school-aged children the best elementary teachers they can possibly have, whether that is herself or the young teachers she trains and mentors. When asked about moving up to take a middle or high school position, her reply is, "Elementary school is not a stepping stone for me. These little ones are top-notch students and they deserve a top-notch teacher. How can I possibly move up from this?" Through high-energy, highly engaged, high-expectations teaching, her elementary school students consistently excel in singing, playing instruments, performing, music reading, and many other tasks set before them. Her goal at UMKC is to share that passion with future teachers and help expand their vision of what young kids are capable of accomplishing if they have the right teachers leading them.
