Ensemble performance is at the foundation of the instrumentalist's musical experience. Sharpening listening skills, interacting with other musicians in rehearsals and concerts, and performing the great works of musical literature contribute to the refinement of the individual musician.

The Conservatory Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, and Opera Orchestra provide our students with the opportunity to participate first-hand in the preparation and performance of the most demanding repertoire. The Wind Symphony and Wind Ensemble offer Conservatory wind and percussion students the challenges of rehearsing and performing the finest artistic repertoire from all musical periods and styles. Chamber music groups are available for all instrumental areas and feature an endowed woodwind quintet and an endowed string quartet. A number of these ensembles are appointed by our faculty and receive formal class credit, while others are ad hoc groups formed by our students.

The instrumental studies division's world-class studio professors add exceptional depth of study and professional experience that are at the heart of musical training.

Jazz is a continually evolving art form growing from a rich and vital history. These roots of jazz have a strong foothold in the history of Kansas City, one of the original centers of jazz music. The Conservatory continues this tradition of exceptional jazz with world-renowned teachers and superb opportunities. Our students perform in a variety of ensembles, study jazz history, jazz improvisation, arranging, jazz theory, studio production, and commercial music. Plus, the opportunities for performances in the Kansas City metropolitan area are excellent. We are confident that the Conservatory's jazz studies program, along with the roots of Kansas City jazz, will continue to grow new voices and spur creativity on an international level.
