The
Conservatory of Music and the Lyric Opera of Kansas City jointly sponsor and support
the Young Artist program. The program is designed for students who possess voices
of potential national or international caliber who wish to further their development
as professional opera singers while enrolled as a full-time graduate student in
the Conservatory. Young Artists can be enrolled either in Master's or Doctoral degree
programs or the Performer's or Artist's Certificate. Auditions for the program are
held annually, usually in February.
The Young Artists are expected to be available to sing for the Lyric Opera in the
ensemble or in comprimario roles for four productions a year as assigned by the
Artistic Director. They must also be available to sing mainstage roles at the Conservatory
where appropriate. Young Artists receive a stipend from the Conservatory and employment
at the Lyric. The opera company pays AGMA scale and the Young Artists must join
AGMA. Voice lessons, vocal coaching, diction, role preparation, and characterization
are all components of the training received. The commitment to the program is for
two years. Apprentices are strongly encouraged to audition for significant summer
programs such as Des Moines Metro Opera, Santa Fe, Chautauqua, Glimmerglass and
others.
Past UMKC Conservatory/Lyric Opera Young Artists have performed at companies such
as New York City Opera, Chicago Lyric, San Francisco, Florida Grand, Glimmerglass,
Hawaii, Houston, Lake George, St. Louis, Santa Fe, Utah Festival, Wolftrap, Chautauqua
and many more.
