Musical Theatre

The Conservatory of Music and Dance welcomes Tony Humrichouser as Director of Musical Theatre.

Our BA or MA degree in Music with a Theatre Concentration combines the extensive resources of the Conservatory’s Voice, Opera and Theatre programs. In collaboration with the UMKC Theatre department, the Musical Theatre Program provides students with the training and performance opportunities essential for careers as music theatre artists.

Kansas City is nationally recognized for its thriving theatre scene. The city hosts dozens of union and non-union theatres alike, producing both established and new musical works. With a strong emphasis on mentorship, our faculty uses its own professional resources and networking ability to provide students with incomparable performance opportunities. Most recently, many of our students have worked directly on projects with Musical Theatre innovators the likes of Stephen Schwartz, Harry Connick Jr., Lynn Ahrens & Stephen Flaherty, and Jason Robert Brown.

In addition, our students have the opportunity to audition for employment at many local theatres including The Coterie Theatre, The Unicorn Theatre, American Heartland Theatre, and Quality Hills Playhouse.

The program is led by Tony Humrichouser, an award winning Director, Actor and Choreographer, whose recent credits include William Finn’s A New Brain and Terrance McNally’s The Full Monty. Professor Humrichouser holds an MFA from Rhode Island College and a Performance Certificate from the prestigious Trinity Repertory/Brown University Consortium in Providence, Rhode Island.
