In addition to providing classes for Conservatory students enrolled in
Bachelors, Masters, and Doctoral programs, the Musicology area offers the
Master of Music in Musicology degree. Additionally, the area co-sponsors
the Conservatory's Musicology and Music Theory Lecture Series and organizes
"First Fridays at Noon," a symposium for musicology students and faculty to
present their work in a public forum.
The musicology faculty brings a variety of research and teaching interests
to the Conservatory. Dr. Olga Dolskaya Ackerly's main research interests lie
in Russian choral music and the history of early western music. Dr. William
Everett has strong interests in the American musical theater, medieval music
and its manifestations in later eras, and the interplay between music and
national identity, especially in Croatia, Great Britain and Finland. Dr.
Andrew Granade is a specialist in twentieth-century music, particularly the
works of American experimental composers, hymnology, and the music of China.
Dr. Sarah Tyrrell's research interests focus on Latin America, especially
Brazil. Together, we offer a comprehensive approach to music history that
serves as a solid foundation for research and further graduate work in the
field. In addition to classes devoted to each major historical period, we
also offer specialized seminars such as History of Opera, Russian Choral
Music, American Mavericks, Latin American Music, Music of Asia, Music of
Vaughan Williams and Holst, and Nordic History, Culture, and Music.
