Aidan Soder Wins ARSC Certificate of Merit Award

for Excellence in Historical Recorded Sound Research

Release Date: 9/25/2009

Dr. Aidan Soder (Assistant Professor of Voice) has just been named a 2009 recipient of the Association for Recorded Sound Collections (ARSC) Certificate of Merit for the ARSC Award for Excellence in Historical Recorded Sound Research. The ARSC Awards Program recognizes and calls attention to the finest contemporary works being published in the field of recorded sound research. Dr. Soder’s book, "Sprechstimme in Arnold Schoenberg’s Pierrot lunaire: a Study of Vocal Performance Practice" (Edwin Mellen Press) was nominated along with a select group of excellent publications from around the world. The ARSC accepts between 100-150 nominations each year, and then chooses 6-7 finalists within each musical category (e.g. classical, jazz, folk). From those finalists, awards are selected for Best Discography and for Best History, and Certificates of Merit to runners-up of exceptional quality. These awards most frequently go to authors whose professional activity is primarily in musicology, and this makes recognition of Dr. Soder (a member of our applied faculty) even more noteworthy. Conservatory faculty member, Dr. William Everett, was the Certificate of Merit winner for Best Research in Recorded Classical Music in 2008 for his book on "Sigmund Romberg" (Yale University Press, 2007). The Conservatory can be proud that another one of our colleagues has been an ARSC award recipient for the second year in a row. Dr. Soder will be recognized along with other winners during the ARSC’s annual conference in New Orleans in May 2010.
