Marciem Bazell, Director of Opera
The opera program at UMKC aims to provide the skills necessary to students to have a successful and fruitful career in the opera industry. These skills include vital instruction in acting, period movement, dance, stage combat, stage make-up, technical stage, and knowledge of diverse musical styles. It is also our mission to provide professional-level performance experience as dictated by the level and ability of the student. To that end, every year we mount two fully-produced mainstage operas and three evenings of one-act operas for younger students. Singers from our program have gone on to sing at the Metropolitan Opera, the Bayreuth Festival, San Francisco Opera, the Chicago Lyric Opera and many other fine companies. We work closely with the Lyric Opera of Kansas City, and offer a Young Artist Program in association with the Lyric (www.kcopera.org). Four outstanding singers with career potential are selected for a two-year apprenticeship, by process of audition. The Young Artists do graduate-level work in Vocal Performance at UMKC and participate in both the Conservatory opera program and the Lyric Opera’s regular season. Performance opportunities at the Lyric range from chorus work to comprimario roles and covering principal roles, depending on the needs of the company and the skills of the singers. They also have the opportunity to perform principal roles with the UMKC opera program. More information can be found here: Apprentice Program. Contact Lee Fowler for more Audition Information. Auditions for the UMKC Opera season are held in late August. Two opera arias are required. Art songs are also acceptable for less experienced students who may not have operatic arias in their repertoire. Our 2007-2008 Season: La Bohème by Giacomo Puccini (November 15 – 18, 2007) Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi by Giacomo Puccini (February 21 – 24, 2008)
