Academy Director Mara Gibson To Premiere New Work

Conservatory Academy director and composer Mara Gibson is accepted to a month-long residency through the Virginia Center for the Arts August, 2015.  During this residency she will compose a new string quartet which will premiere at the Kansas City Art Institute as a part of ArtSounds.

Gibson notes, "The Blackbird project premieres March 8, 2016 as a part of the 10-year anniversary for the ArtSounds series.  The collaboration includes film by UMKC faculty Caitlin Horsmon, choreography by Conservatory dance faculty Gary Abbott and original music inspired by Wallace Steven's 'Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird.' The themes are derived from ordinary and raw materials.  The 13 dancers and  string quartet will be activated by a film which will be projected from behind.  Like Steven's piece, Blackbird is constructed like a Haiku with lightning flashes of imagery and color.  The full duration of the event is 45 minutes."
