UMKC Conservatory Woodwind Students Win at MTNA Competition

UMKC Conservatory woodwind students won all three top spots in the Missouri state round of the 2013-14 MTNA Young Artist Woodwind Competition, and the UMKC Conservatory Graduate Fellowship Woodwind Quintet won the state round of the 2013-14 MTNA Chamber Music (Winds) Competition in St. Louis, Nov. 7–8 at the annual Missouri Music Teachers Association Conference, Washington University, host.

MTNA YOUNG ARTIST WOODWIND COMPETITION
Winner: MICHAEL O'BRIEN, flute (Junior, BM/Flute Performance)
Teacher: Mary Posses

Runner-Up: MARK LAUER, bassoon (Junior, BM/Bassoon Performance)
Teacher: Marita Abner

Honorable Mention: KAREN HAUGE, flute (Second year, Artist's Certificate/Flute Performance)

MTNA CHAMBER MUSIC (WINDS) COMPETITION
Winner: UMKC GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP WOODWIND QUINTET (KAREN HAUGE, flute; MICHAEL PRUCHA, oboe; ABBY LLOYD, clarinet; NATALIE HIGGINS,horn; ADAM LUSK, bassoon)
Coach: Mary Posses

Both competitions are held in 3 stages (state, divisional, national), with the top winner of each round advancing to the next level. In January, 2014, flutist Michael O'Brien and the UMKC Graduate Fellowship Woodwind Quintet will represent Missouri in the West Central Divisional Rounds of the MTNA Young Artist Woodwind Competition and the MTNA Chamber Music (Winds) Competition, respectively, competing against winners from the 7 other West Central Division states. Those competitions are in Des Moines, IA at the West Central Divisional Conference, Drake University, host.
