Jazz & BBQ is 10!

Jazz & BBQ Is 10!

The UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance celebrates the 10th anniversary of the popular Jazz & BBQ event, October 9, 2011, 6 p.m., in the UMKC Student Union. This celebratory concert, with dinner, auction, and fundraiser is always a huge hit due in large part to the sustaining efforts of the Jazz Friends. In this, the 10th year, Jazz & BBQ honors special guest, jazz great Marilyn Maye.

A Kansas native, and Kansas City resident, Marilyn Maye is a well-known and much beloved singer. She appeared on Johnny Carson 76 times, has a Grammy nomination, and accolades galore, too numerous to mention. Jazz & BBQ’s 10th anniversary concert should be a sensational experience, proving, once again, how integral Jazz Friends is to the success of the UMKC Conservatory’s Jazz Studies Program.

Bobby Watson, William D. and Mary Grant / Missouri Professor of Jazz Studies and Dan Thomas, assistant director of jazz studies, both agree, “We are now attracting national talent that stretches far beyond the Midwest. Many of these students are coming in at the graduate level and are playing an instant role at the university and in the community. Evidence of our growth is the Concert Jazz Orchestra making it to number 4 on the national airplay charts with the recording of The Gates BBQ Suite. Our students are Betty Carter Fellows, teaching assistants at leading jazz programs throughout the country, Banff Artist Residents, recording artists and have won many of the world’s most prestigious jazz competitions.”

Jazz Friends is a unique and enormously supportive group whose mission to encourage the creative artistry and talent of the UMKC Conservatory students and faculty is deeply rooted in the members’ love of jazz and philanthropy. Jazz & BBQ is but one symbol of the Jazz Friends’ success and support.

The 10th annual Jazz & BBQ is October 9, 2011, at the UMKC Student Union. The silent auction and buffet dinner is at 6 p.m., and the concert is at 7:30 p.m. Call 816-235-1561 for more information.
