Conservatory Alumna Wins Principal Flute Position
Hannah Porter Occeña, (BA, flute performance, 2011, summa cum laude), who studied with Mary Posses, has won the principal flute position in the Topeka Symphony Orchestra. Auditions were held August 24, 2014.
Ms. Occeña earned a Master of Music in Flute (Dip.RAM), with distinction, at London's Royal Academy of Music, where she was awarded prizes for the best final woodwind recital and the top flute recital. Since her return to the Kansas City area in 2013, she has been rincipal Fflutist of the Midwest Chamber Ensemble. She is also the flutist of the Occeña-Chen Duo, with pianist Belle Chen; their first CD, New Beginnings: Australian and American Duos for Flute and Piano, was released earlier this year.
Ms. Occeña joins another graduate of the UMKC Conservatory flute studio in the Topeka Symphony. Jonathan Borja (MM/Flute Performance 2005; DMA/Flute Performance 2010; MM Musicology 2010), on the Conservatory's Musicology faculty, has been the orchestra's second flutist since 2010.For more information, please contact:
