R. Andrew Lee and David McIntire, Conservatory Alumni, Are 2015 UMKC Alumni Spotlight Award Winners
R. Andrew Lee (MM piano performance, 2006; DMA, piano performance, 2010) and David McIntire (DMA composition, 2009) are the 2015 Class of Alumni Awardees, for the Spotlight Award.
Andrew Lee and David McIntire have garnered national attention in the world of classical music. The two formed Irritable Hedgehog in 2010 having met as graduate students at UMKC in 2005. It was a risky – and entrepreneurial – move. The music industry had been in decline for many years, and small, independent record labels rarely succeeded. David and Andrew broke that trend and the Hedgehog label has established itself as a significant voice in minimal and electroacoustic music. To date, they have released 11 physical albums. Their recording of piano music by German composer Eva-Maria Houben also appeared in influential classical music critic Alex Ross’s "Notable Classical Performances and Recordings of 2013." This recording also appeared in influential classical music critic Alex Ross’s Top Ten List for 2013.
