UMKC Composition DMA Student Derek Jenkins Wins Gerald Kemner Prize
Conservatory composition DMA student Derek Jenkins has won the 2013 Gerald Kemner Prize for Wind Ensemble. His piece Boreas: The North Wind will be performed next year by Steve Davis and the UMKC Conservatory Wind Symphony.
The late professor emeritus Gerald Kemner was a Conservatory icon for generations of students, as well as a prolific composer of orchestral, choral, organ, and piano music. He served as professor of harpsichord, theory, and composition at UMKC for more than 30 years. Following his 2007 death, an endowed composition scholarship was established in his memory.
The Gerald Kemner Prize In Large Instrumental Ensemble Composition was endowed in Dr. Kemner's honor in 2011 by friends, family, and former students.
