Conservatory Performs In New York City at Le Poisson Rouge, March 9, 2012
The UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance is on the road to New York City!
We are thrilled to announce that Conservatory students. faculty, and alumni will perform a concert titled Crossroads, in New York City's renowned le poisson rouge, March 9, 2012.
Now in its 107th year, the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) Conservatory is internationally recognized as a center for artistic excellence, innovation and engagement. The Conservatory is a vital partner in Kansas City’s renaissance as America's Creative Crossroads, most recently symbolized by the internationally heralded openings of the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, and the Todd Bolender Center for Dance and Creativity.
The UMKC Conservatory, home to a robust composition community, is committed to living music, from Charlie Parker to Zhou Long, from John Kander to Narong Prangcharoen. The March 9, 2012, Crossroads concert is an eclectic mix of people, Conservatory students, and cultures, including composers Paul Rudy, winner of a 2010 Rome Prize fellowship; Guggenhiem Fellow James Mobberley; Chen Yi, winner of the Charles Ives Living Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, NYC’s own John Corigliano, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and Barr Laureate Composer at UMKC 2012–14; the music of Kevin Oldham and John Kander as sung by internationally acclaimed tenor and UMKC Professor Vinson Cole, and the New York premiere of excerpts from Zhou Long's brilliant opera Madame White Snake, winner of 2011 Pulitzer Prize in Music.
Conservatory Dean Peter Witte remarks, "LPR is hailed by the New York Times as 'the coolest place to hear contemporary music' and as 'a downright musical marvel' by the Los Angeles Times. We're honored to be invited to perform and eager to share UMKC's commitment to living music. We see our Crossroads performance in New York City's LPR as proof of concept—Kansas City is America's Creative Crossroads."
