Emerita Faculty Martha Longmire Passes Away

Conservatory emerita faculty Martha Longmire has passed away. She taught voice at the Conservatory 1958–90 and was head of the Vocal Studies Division for many years, winning the Kauffman Excellence in Teaching Award 1989-90. Visitation is 10:00 AM, with a service at 11:00 AM, Saturday, February 18, St. John's United Methodist Church, 6900 Ward Parkway, KCMO. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Martha Longmire Scholarship at the UMKC Conservatory.

LONGMIRE Martha Roper Holmes Longmire, 84, of Leawood, Kansas, died February 11, 2012. Martha was born June 18, 1927, in Wichita Falls, Texas, to Wayne J. and Martha R. Holmes. Martha had a remarkable career in music, including performing with world renowned conductor Bruno Walter and numerous nationally known symphony orchestras. She also studied having with legendary opera performers Lotte Lehann and John Charles Thomas. As a resident of Kansas City, Martha was a lifelong Professor of Voice at the Conservatory of Music at the University of Missouri, Kansas City. Retiring after 31 years, she extended her career in music as the Executive Director of the Kansas City Civic Opera.
 
Martha is survived by her husband, Bill, of 59 years. Her four children: Bill, Jr. (Gretchen), Lou (Mike), Bob (Susan), and Jamie. She leaves behind five grandchildren: Erik, Anna, Alex, Colin, and Sam. They were the lights of her world. And, she was the light of theirs. We will miss her. The Angels are singing, and Martha is now home!
 
The Visitation and Memorial will be held on Saturday, February 18, at St. John's United Methodist Church in Kansas City at 6900 Ward Parkway. Visitation is at 10:00 A.M. with the Memorial to follow at 11:00 A.M.
