Cheptoo Kositany-Buckner To Give Conservatory Commencement 2016 Address


The UMKC Conservatory is pleased to announce that Cheptoo Kositany-Buckner is the Conservatory’s 2016 Commencement speaker.

Ms. Kositany-Buckner is the new executive director of Kansas City’s American Jazz Museum, a role she begins after a 25-year career with the Kansas City Public Library, where she was deputy director of strategic services.

Kositany-Buckner has many connections throughout Kansas City. She is a past president of the Mid-American Library Alliance Council, serves on the boards of the Kansas City Public School Retirement System and the KC STEM Alliance, and is a member of the Chancellor’s African American Leaders Council at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and the executive committee of American Public Square.

Conservatory Dean Peter Witte notes, “Ms. Kositany-Buckner's appointment at the American Jazz Museum is another reason to celebrate Kansas City and our internationally recognized 18th and Vine Jazz District. Cheptoo leads collaboratively, honoring our city’s legacies and possibilities. We look forward to celebrating her next chapters along with those of our graduates."
