Conservatory alumni Beau Bledsoe, Melinda Hedgecorth, and Mark Southerland Perform in Spain


Conservatory alumni Beau Bledsoe (MM, performance, 1996), Melinda Hedgecorth, (BFA, dance, 1997) along with Mark Southerland, (Conservatory 1988-92), who perform as Flamenco Mio, spent time traveling and performing in Spain in September 2011, incorporating Kansas City jazz and experimental instruments into traditional flamenco culture.

Flamenco Mio is Bledsoe and Southerland (who live in Kansas City) and Hedgecorth, who lives in Sevilla, Spain.

Flamenco Mio was awarded a grant from the Lighton International Artists Exchange Program to afford Kansas City musicians Beau Bledsoe and Mark Southerland funding for travel for five performances in Spain. The grant covered the cost of hiring and performing with 5 musicians and one dancer from Sevilla.

Flamenco Mio is Bledsoe on guitar and oud and Southerland on saxophone and horn sculptures and Sevilla’s resident flamenco dancer and Conservatory alum Melinda Hedgecorth.  Three Spanish percussionists and two Spanish singers were employed to perform for the project.

Bledsoe and Southerland traveled in Spain on the Lighton Grant for three weeks.
