The Parker Quartet performs in the Conservatory's Music Alliance series, Saturday, January 22, 2011, 7:30 p.m., White Recital Hall. Hailed by The New York Times as “something extraordinary” and by the Boston Globe for their “fiercely committed performances,” the Parker Quartet has distinguished itself as one of the preeminent ensembles of its generation. The quartet was just nominated for a Grammy award in the Best Chamber Music Performance category for their recording of the quartets of Gyorgy Ligeti.

Their program includes DVORAK: Selections from Cypresses for String Quartet, B. 152; KURTAG: Twelve Microludes, Op. 13; HINDEMITH: Quartet for Strings No. 4, Op. 22; and MENDELSSOHN: Quartet for Strings No. 4 in E Minor, Op. 44, No. 2.

The Parker Quartet began its professional touring career in 2002, and in 2005 sparked international acclaim by winning the Concert Artists Guild Competition as well as the Grand Prix and Mozart Prize at the 2005 Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition in France. The Quartet was awarded the prestigious 2009–2011 Cleveland Quartet Award. Given biennially by Chamber Music America, this award honors and promotes a rising young string quartet whose artistry demonstrates that it is in the process of establishing a major career.

The Parker Quartet is in its second season as Quartet-in-Residence with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. They are the first-ever Artists-in-Residence with Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) and American Public Media (APM).

The Quartet will give two master classes at UMKC during their residency: Jan. 25, 1 p.m., room 521 Performing Arts Center:  the Quartet works with the Composition department's Composer's Forum.  Wed., Jan. 26, 3 p.m. White Recital Hall: the Quartet works with Conservatory string quartets.  FREE and open to the public.
