Conservatory Alum Hermon Mehari Is Making Things Happen
Conservatory jazz trumpet alum Hermon Mehari is on the move globally. His group, The Diverse Trio, (Hermon Mehari - Trumpet (alum), Ryan Lee - Drums (student); Ben Leifer - Bass (alum)) completed a month long residency in Paris June 2010. It included performances in Paris, Barcelona, Spain and Lausanne, Switzerland.
Mehari has collaborated with others in the Kansas City music community to start a group called The Sound. The goal is to bring the artistic community together and enhance it in its quality and opportunities. The group hosts a weekly jam session at the Mutual Musicians Foundation every Friday night which is streamed live. The group will hold events that bring the different genres and circles of artists in the city together. The first event was a block party October 22, 2010, which brought visual artists together with jazz musicians, DJs and hip hop artists.
Hermon returns to Paris for two weeks, where he will perform with different Parisian musicians. He travels to London to perform in a club with KC singer Megan Birdsall. On November 26, Meharis organizes a big jazz and hip-hop collaboration at Crosstown Station (1522 McGee) called Black Friday. It features one of the greatest innovators of jazz's newest generation, Logan Richardson (alto sax, alum) from New York City, as well as Peter Schlamb (vibes) from St. Louis, Mark Lowrey (piano, alum), Ryan Lee (drums, student), Dominique Sanders (bass, student), Hermon Mehari (trumpet, alum), two of Kansas City's most popular emcees, a DJ and two singers. The show starts at 10 PM.
