Conservatory alum Jeremy Levy won the Sammy Nestico Award for a New Jazz Composition


Jeremy Levy (BM, trombone performance, 2001) won the United States Air Force Band's Sammy Nestico Award. Named after former director of the Airmen of Note and famed jazz arranger/composer/ orchestrator Sammy Nestico, this competition is a call for unpublished works for jazz ensemble. Airmen of Note will produce a professional quality recording for the winner and perform the composition during the Jazz Heritage Series. Additionally, the winner will be flown to Washington, DC for the performance and will have an opportunity to receive a $2,000 follow on commission for a second work. Orchestrator, Composer/Arranger, and Instrumentalist, Jeremy Levy balances his busy career between writing and performing. As an orchestrator, Levy has worked in nearly every medium, including film, television, and video games. Recent projects include: Battlestar Gallactica, Caprica, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Pushing Daisies, Rush Hour 3, God of War 3, Aliens VS Monsters (Video Game), G.I. Joe (Video Game), and Dark Void (Video Game). As a performer, Levy currently tours and records as lead trombonist with The Brian Setzer Orchestra, and has recorded for many artists including The Game, Silversun Pickups, and Susan Tedeschi. Levy co-leads the The Budman/Levy Orchestra, a contemporary big band that provides an outlet to his original music. Featuring LA's finest musicians, the orchestra focuses on contemporary, lush orchestration, and interplay between musicians. The orchestra is putting the finishing touches on a new CD of Levy's original material.
