Gary Abbott Appointed As Assistant Professor of Modern Dance
The UMKC Conservatory is pleased to announce that Gary Abbott joins the Conservatory as Assistant Professor of Modern Dance, beginning fall, 2012.
Abbott began his career as a dancer in Atlanta, GA with Barbara Sullivan’s Atlanta Dance Theatre. There he created works for musicals presented by Jomandi Productions and The Clark College Players. Mr. Abbott attended the California Institute of the Arts to study with Crystine Lawson, Nicholas Gunn and Mia Slavenska, and later moved to Los Angeles where he danced with Lula Washington Dance Theatre and Los Angeles Contemporary Dance Theatre.
Invited to dance with the Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble of Denver, Colorado, Mr. Abbott choreographed shows for the Denver Center for the Performing Arts including Star Fever (based on The Bacchae by Euripides) and Don Quixote directed by Pavel Dobrusky. Abbott continued to work with Mr. Dobrusky at the Cleveland Playhouse, where he served as choreographer for the play Yerma by Federico Garcia Lorca.
Presently, Mr. Abbott is a co-founder of Deeply Rooted Dance Theater. His choreographic contributions for Deeply Rooted include: Desire, Just Miss Sadie, The Dance We Dance, MOVE!, Hand to Mouth, and Nefertiti.
