Joseph Kern has won the 2012 UMKC orchestra composition competition, Dr. Gerald Kemner Prize, for his 2012 work Rusted Mechanism. As winner of this competition, his work will be performed on the UMKC Conservatory's Concerto/Aria Competition Concert, Spring 2013.

The late professor emeritus Gerald Kemner was a Conservatory icon for generations of students, as well as a prolific composer of orchestral, choral, organ, and piano music.  He served as professor of harpsichord, theory, and composition at UMKC for more than 30 years.  Following his 2007 death, an endowed composition scholarship was established in his memory.

The Gerald Kemner Prize In Large Instrumental Ensemble Composition was endowed in Dr. Kemner's honor in 2011 by friends, family, and former students.

Congrats to Joseph Kern.
