SPECIAL PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

Who auditions? All undergraduate applicants must perform a successful audition for admission consideration into the Conservatory. All graduate performance applicants and all performance certificate applicants must also perform an audition for admission consideration into the Conservatory.

But, we do have lots of non-performance fields of study and each has a couple of special requirements for admissions. These modifications and requirements are listed below.

Composition. All applicants for the composition degree programs must also submit a portfolio of their work for consideration of admission to the composition degree program. Along with that portfolio you will need to also include some sort of recording of the works submitted. The recording may be midi files or actual performances of the works. Successful graduate applicants to the composition program will then need to perform an audition in August to determine applied level placement. Remember, all undergraduates must perform an audition prior to being admitted.

Musicology. Graduate applicants for the M.M. in Musicology degree must also submit a sample of scholarly writing and a statement of purpose. Successful applicants to the Musicology program will need to perform an audition in August to determine applied level placement.

Music Therapy. All applicants for music therapy degrees must meet with the music therapy faculty. All undergraduates must perform a successful audition as a part of the admissions process. A successful audition is also required for those with an incoming music bachelor’s (excepting music education) degree applying for the Music Therapy “Graduate Equivalency” Program. Music Therapists returning for the Master of Arts – Music Therapy Degree will need to provide clinical skill competencies in lieu of an audition as part of admission procedures. IPHD candidates have other requirements (please contact music therapy faculty).

Music Education. All applicants for music education degrees must meet with the music education faculty. Successful graduate applicants to the music education program will then need to perform an audition in August to determine applied level placement. Remember, all undergraduates must perform an audition prior to be admitted.

Music Theory. All applicants for the music theory programs must meet with the music theory faculty. Graduate applicants are required to submit a music theory writing sample for consideration in the admissions process. Successful graduate applicants to the music theory program will then need to perform an audition in August to determine applied level placement. Remember, all undergraduates must perform an audition prior to be admitted.

UMKC/Lyric Opera of Kansas City. Applicants must complete and have on file the UMKC/LOKC application. Applicants to this program are required to submit the UMKC application and the Conservatory's supplemental application prior to auditioning. Extra program information is available here.
