UMKC Conservatory Gig Office

Referral Program Overview

The UMKC Conservatory Gig Office, operated by the Conservatory’s Academy, provides a referral service that connects Conservatory students with performance opportunities throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area. Our goal is to help clients find talented student performers while offering Conservatory students valuable professional experience.

For Clients

Requesting a Performer

We understand that many clients requesting live music are not performers themselves, so we have created an easy-to-follow request form. This form provides helpful definitions, examples and common event types to guide you through the process.

Request a Performer Referral

Matching Process

Once your request is submitted:

  1. Gig Office staff review your event details.
  2. Event information is shared with student performers whose skills align with your request.
  3. Interested and available students respond to the Gig Office.
  4. You will receive a referral list of all students who have expressed interest.

Please allow 7–10 business days to receive your referral list.

Important Notes for Clients

  • The Conservatory Academy cannot guarantee that a student performer will be available for your event.
  • All performance details — including fees, payment arrangements, music selections and any contracts — must be arranged directly between you and the performer.
  • The Conservatory does not manage bookings, negotiate fees or handle payments.
  • Clients are responsible for contacting performers from their referral list to discuss and finalize event details.

For Students

Joining the Referral List

Conservatory students interested in being considered for performance opportunities may apply through the stundent performer application link.

Student Performer Application

Application Process

  1. Complete the student information form.
  2. Your application will be reviewed by Gig Office staff.
  3. You will then complete a brief orientation to prepare you for participating in the referral program.
  4. After orientation, you will be added to the list of eligible performers.

Referral Process

  • When a client submits a request, Gig Office staff send the event information to eligible student performers.
  • Students must respond within 72 hours indicating their interest and availability.
  • Only students who respond affirmatively will be included on the referral list sent to the client.
  • Once a client contacts you, it is the performer’s responsibility to communicate with the client and finalize all performance details.

Important Notes for Student Performers

  • Students may choose whether or not to accept any performance opportunity.
  • Gigs are not vetted, supervised or guaranteed by the Conservatory.
  • Participation is voluntary and not connected to coursework or academic requirements.
  • The Gig Office provides referrals only and is not responsible for payments, logistics, contracts or communication between the performer and the client.

Professional Conduct

As a participant in the Gig Office referral program, you represent the UMKC Conservatory at every event. Student performers are expected to conduct themselves professionally, arrive on time, communicate clearly with clients and present a positive and respectful demeanor at all times.
