Conservatory Alumnus Charles Bruffy Named 2016 Alumni Award Recipient

The UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance is pleased to note that Charles Bruffy (MM, choral conducting, 1988) is the recipient of the UMKC Class of 2016 Alumni Award for the Conservatory.

Each year, UMKC honors some of the best in its alumni ranks. The UMKC Alumni Association Governing Board and the campus have announced the winners of the 2016 Alumni Awards. The 2016 Alumni Awards luncheon will take place on April 21, 2016, when the campus and community will recognize these individuals—and the Legacy Awardee family—for their accomplishments and service.

Charles Bruffy has been artistic director of the Kansas City Chorale since 1988 and of the Phoenix Chorale since 1999. He has also been Chorus Director for the Kansas City Symphony Chorus since 2008.

His eclectic discography includes six recordings with Nimbus Records and seven recordings with Chandos Records. The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences has recognized Bruffy with a total of ten GRAMMY nominations and four wins: Best Engineered Album, Classical for Grechaninov: Passion Week, featuring the Kansas City Chorale and Phoenix Chorale (2008); for Best Small Ensemble Performance for Spotless Rose: Hymns to the Virgin Mary, featuring the Phoenix Chorale (2009); and for Best Engineered Album, Classical, and Best Choral Performance for Life and Breath: Choral Works by René Clausen, featuring the Kansas City Chorale (2012).
