Some UMKC Conservatory classes are available to non-Conservatory students for undergraduate or graduate credit. These varied opportunities are a great way for arts educators to earn professional development credits! Continuing education classes are billed at the UMKC semester-hour tuition rate. Tuition is payable directly to the UMKC Cashier’s Office.
Credit registration is due by May 20, 2024.
All summer undergraduate course options are part of the Conservatory Academy’s Summer Programs and Festivals. In order to attend a program, students must first enroll for the program with the Conservatory Academy and pay all event registration fees.
After a participant is enrolled for the event, they may optionally also enroll for credit with the University.
To obtain credit for a undergraduate level course, you must register as a visiting/community student.
Kansas City Conducting Symposium
Creative Music Making investigates the creative process. How do we, as music educators, foster creativity in our classrooms, rehearsals, and planning? This class works to stimulate greater insight into the many aspects of creativity, while facilitating hands-on opportunities to do so in meaningful and reflective ways.
DetailsThis course explores the fundamental principles of music learning and provides opportunities for students to practice applying those principles to music teaching. Students will analyze their effectiveness at structuring meaningful learning experiences when teaching others in authentic settings (by analyzing videos from rehearsals, lessons, or classrooms) and when structuring learning experiences for themselves (by analyzing videos of practice).
DetailsThis class will introduce and provide a basic understanding of trauma-informed care and how that translates into the world of academia. By learning trauma-informed pedagogical approaches when engaging with diverse students in the music education setting, teachers can be more responsive and supportive in moments of need. Material will provide a basic anatomical understanding of what happens within the body during a trauma response, and how educators can better engage and support their students. Students in this course will learn how to prepare class materials, lectures, assignments, and engagements with students to provide a safe and supportive environment.
DetailsDesigned with the career educator in mind, this course investigates the challenges of teaching creative/performance-based subjects in the modern rehearsal format. This summer we will be examining common pedagogical challenges, such as not understanding rhythmic subdivision or pitch tendencies of specific instruments, and developing action plans to help students overcome these challenges. We will be using the book Atomic Habits by James Clear as the central text. Students will be asked to select four common teaching challenges and create an action plan using each of the four laws of Atomic Habits as the framework for their action plan.
