The Washington Post has named Conservatory composition faculty Chen Yi as one of the top 35 female composers in classical music in an August 4, 2017 article. The author Anne Midgette notes, "Born into a musical household in China but forced to work in the countryside during the Cultural Revolution, Chen Yi is one of several expatriate Chinese composers who in the 1990s and early 2000s brought some of the sounds and instruments of China into the vocabulary of Western orchestras, particularly in American concert halls."
The article also names Caroline Shaw, who performs with Roomful of Teeth (in residence at the Conservatory in 2014) and Jennifer Higdon, one of the Conservatory's Barr Institute Laureates, among others.
Congratulations Chen Yi!
