Conservatory Alum Jim Mair Wins 2017 Alumni Award

The Conservatory is pleased to announce that Jim Mair (MA, 1990) is the recipient of the 2017 UMKC Alumni Award (Conservatory of Music and Dance).  

James C. Mair founded the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra and started the “Basically Basie” big band competition, which brings young talent to Kansas City from all across the region. He is currently a professor of music and director of Instrumental Studies at Kansas City Kansas Community College.  From 2003 -2010 he served as the Artistic Director and conductor for The Kansas City Jazz Orchestra, a performance organization that he and his wife Mary founded.
