The Conservatory is pleased to note that Chen Yi and Zhou Long's composition Humen 1839 is featured Oct. 21, 2018, 3 p.m. in David Geffen Hall, at New York's Lincoln Center. The piece is performed as part of the China Now Music Festival by the Bard College US-China Music Institute.
This event features works inspired by three wrenching events in Chinese history: the heroic effort during the first Opium War (1839–42) to confiscate and burn imported opium; the Nanjing Massacre (1937); and the experience of the “sent-down youth” during the Cultural Revolution (1966–76), when more than 17 million urban Chinese youths were sent to the countryside to labor alongside farmers. Works include:
- Chen Yi and Zhou Long, Humen 1839
- Ye Xiaogang, My Faraway Nanjing
- Tony Fok and Su Wei, Ask the Sky and the Earth
Tickets, $20–$50, available at lincolncenter.org, CenterCharge at 212-721-6500, or the David Geffen Hall box office.
Congratulations!
