The Conservatory is pleased to welcome Dr. Owen Belcher as Assistant Professor of Music Theory, starting Fall, 2019. Dr. Belcher brings a wealth of diverse research and teaching interests to the Conservatory, and will fill important needs in teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses in music theory. Owen received his Ph.D. in Music Theory from the Eastman School of Music in 2018, an MM in Music Theory from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and a BM from Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina. His research interests include the analysis of J.S. Bach's vocal works, analysis of music with text, transformational approaches to 19th- and 20th- century theories of harmony, public music theory, and the analysis of recent contemporary music (Caroline Shaw's music in particular). He has presented papers on these topics at national conferences, and has publications in process.
