The UMKC Conservatory is pleased to note that Yotam Haber, Associate Professor of Music Composition has been named a Fulbright Distinguished Senior Scholar for 2023–24. Dr. Haber will teach at Israel's Jerusalem Academy, Fall 2023.
Distinguished Scholar awards are viewed as the most prestigious appointments in the Fulbright Scholar Program. Awards are open to scholars who have more than seven years of experience in their discipline or area of expertise, though some awards may further restrict eligibility. Distinguished Scholars are expected to actively engage host institutions in a spirit of promoting mutual understanding and sharing knowledge.
Dr. Haber’s music is hailed by New Yorker critic Alex Ross as “deeply haunting,” and chosen as one of the “30 composers under 40” by Orpheus Chamber Orchestra’s Project 440. Haber was born in Holland and grew up in Israel, Nigeria, and Milwaukee. He is the recipient of a 2017 Koussevitsky Commission, a 2013 Fromm Music Foundation commission, a 2013 NYFA award, the 2007 Rome Prize and a 2005 John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship, among others.
In Fall 2022 Haber was one of 12 composers awarded a commission by Chamber Music America in the Classical Commissioning category. Dr. Haber won his commission (instrumentation for saxophone and piano) for the Kahl & Nyce Duo.
