Conservatory Wind Symphony Commissions Work by Composition Student Yunfei Li

The Conservatory Wind Symphony, directed by Steven D. Davis, has commissioned Conservatory DMA composition student Yunfei Li's work Five Elements (2021). Conservatory Wind Symphony premieres the work at 7:30 pm on October 21, in UMKC's White Recital Hall, conducted by DMA conducting student Anya Pogorelova, who was also involved in the commission. Anya Pogorelova is a pianist, percussionist, and music educator originally from Saratov, Russia. She holds a Master of Music in Conducting from Georgia State University, where she studied with Robert J. Ambrose and Chester B. Phillips; a Bachelor of Music in Music Education and Bachelor of Education, both with high honors, from the University of Saskatchewan. Yunfei Li recently graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a Master of Music in Composition. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Electronic Music Production at the Beijing Central Conservatory of Music. Yunfei’s composition includes solo instrumental, chamber ensembles, large ensembles, digital and mix media, and film.

This commission was made by grant funding from the UMKC Women’s Council and the support of 41 consortium members across North America.
