The Conservatory is pleased to announce that Dr. Dan DiPiero will join the Conservatory faculty as an Assistant Professor of Music Studies in Fall 2023 and comes to the Conservatory from Ithaca College, where he is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Musicology. His first book, Contingent Encounters: Improvisation in Music and Everyday Life, was published with the University of Michigan Press last year and argues that improvisation is not a rare occurrence but a feature of human life. His writing has also appeared in Critical Studies in Improvisation, Rancière and Music (Edinburgh University Press), Journal of Popular Music Studies, Los Angeles Review of Books, Sounding Out!, Cleveland Review of Books, boundary 2 online, and Jazz and Culture (forthcoming).
Prior to Ithaca, Dan taught at Miami University and the Ohio State University, where he earned his PhD in the Department of Comparative Studies in 2019. He also holds degrees from the California Institute of the Arts (MA, MFA) and Capital University’s Conservatory (BM). In addition to his musicological work, Dr. DiPiero is also an active musician, and his principal drum teachers are Joe La Barbera, Bob Breithaupt, and Bill Ransom.
Welcome Dr. DiPiero.
