Non-credit private lessons and classes are taught by Conservatory music faculty, alumni and current graduate students in a fun, informative and supportive environment.

Private lessons

The Academy offers non-credit, one-on-one lessons in piano, guitar, composition, voice, strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion. Those interested in private lessons enroll in weekly 30-, 45- or 60-minute lessons for the entire semester or, if enrolling mid-semester, for the remainder of the semester. Fall and Spring Semesters are 18 weeks, and the Summer Session is nine weeks. All lessons are taught on the UMKC Conservatory campus.

Group classes

There are several non-credit group classes available for just $15 per class. Kids ages 0-13 may take Academy kids classes. There are also classes for teen and adult beginners. All classes meet once a week at a predetermined time. Most group classes are 14- or 16-week sessions during the Fall and Spring Semesters, with eight-week sessions during the Summer, except for Family Music, which is offered in two, 10-week sessions during the Fall and Spring Semesters.

Auditions are not required for lessons and most classes. Lessons cannot be paid for using UMKC tuition fees, and credit is not available for lessons or classes taken through the Academy.

The Conservatory offers several classes for credit for UMKC students who are not majoring in music, which can be found on Pathway.

Register for private lessons or group classes

The Academy offers merit-based scholarships to outstanding musicians. Students must be nominated by a music teacher such as an Academy instructor, private instructor or band or orchestra director and have a successful audition. Awards are applied directly to tuition for private lessons or music classes.

Scholarship applications are due April 15 for the 2020–21 school year. Auditions will be held May 16.

To request an application form, contact the Academy at 816-235-2741 or email music-ce@umkc.edu.
